Saskatoon University Elects Steelworker For NDP

Sister Jennifer Bowes (USW Local 5917) in Saskatoon University has been declared elected in the Saskatchewan general election.

We extend our congratulations to Jennifer on her win and look forward to her representation in the Saskatchewan Legislature. We also thank Malik Draz (USW Local 2014) in Saskatoon Westview and Kelly Hardy (USW Local 9841) in Regina Walsh Acres for stepping up and running solid campaigns in their constituencies. It takes courage to stand for elected office and those that do, deserve our thanks.

Steelworkers also extend congratulations to Saskatchewan NDP Leader Ryan Meili on his win in Saskatoon Meewasin. Results from Second Preliminary Count show the NDP with 12 seats and the Sask Party with 49 seats. The final count will take place on Nov. 7 when vote-by-mail ballots received after Oct. 26 as well as in-person absentee ballots cast at returning offices are counted.

“Congratulations to all Steelworkers who got involved in the Saskatchewan election. Your hard work reaching out to members in your workplace, meeting virtually over Zoom, safely knocking on doors, making calls, and waving signs made an impact in this campaign and we elected Jennifer Bowes to the Saskatchewan Legislature,” said Stephen Hunt, USW District 3 Director.

Congratulations to all the MLAs who have been re-elected and we look forward to working with newly-elected MLAs from across the Province.

“While we don’t have an NDP government, it’s important that we continue our fight for Steelworkers in Saskatchewan,” said Hunt. “Many workers are being affected by austerity measures resulting in the stripping of gains won through collective bargaining and even job loss. We will continue calling on the Sask Party to use Canadian steel made in Saskatchewan for major infrastructure projects including the steel used in replacement lines for SaskEnergy. The Sask Party needs to act now as the clock is ticking for up to 500 Steelworkers at the Evraz steel mill in Regina. We can’t afford to keep using steel from overseas – we must start ‘buying Canadian’ and keep good jobs in Saskatchewan.”

Thank you to all Steelworkers for getting involved and voting in this election.
