Impasse Persists at ArcelorMittal, Strike Continues

SEPT-ÎLES, Que. – Following a meeting today between the parties, an impasse remains in the labour dispute at ArcelorMittal operations in Quebec’s North Shore region. A strike by 2,500 members of the United Steelworkers/Syndicat des Métallos continues at ArcelorMittal facilities  in Fermont and Port-Cartier.

The parties met today for the first time since the strike began on May 10.

“This afternoon’s meeting revealed there is no common ground at this time. The strike continues at all ArcelorMittal facilities in Fermont and Port-Cartier,” said Nicolas Lapierre, USW Co-ordinator for the North Shore region.

The USW represents 2,500 members of Locals 5778, 6869, 8664, 7401 and 7401-FP.

The United Steelworkers, affiliated with the Quebec Federation of Labour, is the largest private-sector union in Quebec, representing more than 60,000 workers in all economic sectors.
