Statement on the Tragic Death of a Steelworker Near Gold River, B.C.

The United Steelworkers union is deeply saddened by the death of one of its members, Chris Bohn, on Monday, March 1, 2021, who was working at a logging site, Tree Farm Licence 19, near Gold River, B.C.

“We offer our condolences to the members’ spouse, his three children, family, friends and all of his fellow Steelworkers in Local 1-1937,” said Ed Kent, USW District 3 Health, Safety and Environment Coordinator. “This is a tragic event and we are committed to finding answers through ongoing investigations. The RCMP is working to determine if there was any criminality involved.”

The union deployed two local union investigators and engaged the USW Emergency Response Team to support the family, co-workers, and to participate in the fatality investigation. Employee Family Assistance Plan grief counsellors were also engaged to assist the family and co-workers.

“We are participating in the investigation and it is essential for us to understand what led to this tragic workplace death and to make sure it is never repeated,” said Kent.

Our thoughts are with the family during this very difficult time.
