Steel Dumping Submission

Overview: On March 9th 2017, the USW testified before the House of Commons Committee on International Trade on the factors affecting the Canadian steel industry’s ability to compete. The USW submitted a detailed brief to the committee outlining the challenges facing the Canadian steel industry. In particular, the Steelworkers outlined how Chinese overcapacity in the sector has led to the dumping of Chinese steel into the North American market – much to the detriment of the Canadian steel industry. As a result, the Steelworkers made clear in their oral and written submission to the committee the need for trade law reform in order to combat Chinese steel dumping.

Please note that the brief available on this page is different from the one presented to the committee. Committee guidelines for briefs required the Steelworkers submit a 10 page brief to the committee. As a result, the Steelworkers focused exclusively on Chinese overcapacity, and the need for trade law reform, in their brief to the committee. The brief available on this page includes a more thorough discussion on how supporting the auto and energy sector can indirectly support the steel industry in a crucial way.
