Project, communications and outreach officer

The Steelworkers Humanity Fund (SHF) is a registered Canadian charity working in international development, sponsored by the United Steelworkers (USW). The SHF works to build the capacity of civil society partners to uphold human rights and labour rights, and address the underlying causes of poverty on a global scale. The SHF’s education program is focused on the membership of the USW, and strives to make connections between global struggles and struggles of workers in Canada.

The SHF is seeking a dynamic, bilingual (French and English) individual to join our small staff team, reporting to the Executive Director of the SHF.

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Communications and Outreach
2. Develop and implement a communications strategy focusing on increasing the profile of the SHF among USW members, including through social media and print-based communications
3. Manage a SHF strategy promoting participation in SHF among USW activists and staff
4. Support SHF public policy or corporate campaigns
5. Assist in representing the SHF in various civil society coalitions and networks of like-minded trade unions, human rights and international development organizations

• Education
• Facilitate educational interventions on issues related to globalization, development, and international solidarity
• Ongoing design of educational material to keep them up to date
• Coordinate and lead learning exchanges with SHF partners

• Project Management of International and Canadian Development Projects
• Assisting project partners design and implement projects
• Monitor project reporting
• Evaluate project results
• Identify and apply for external funding opportunities
• Communicating results & challenges in ways relevant to USW membership

Qualifications

• Demonstrated commitment to human rights, social justice and the labour movement
• Excellent organizational, problem-solving and communication skills, including ability to convey complex ideas in plain language
• Experience with implementation, administration and financial management for international development projects
• Experience working in coalitions and alliances inside and outside the labour movement
• Participating in or experience working with racialized and/or marginalized communities
• Understanding of gender analysis, intersectionality, and the role of women in development
• Experience working in a team in a fluid, fast-paced environment, with minimal supervision
• Fluent in English and French (oral and written)
• Ability to travel extensively in Canada and internationally, and to work outside normal office hours

Experience and skills required

• At least 5 years of relevant work experience in the area of social justice and solidarity, including substantial experience with adult education, communications and international development
• Understanding of the role and function of trade unions, and of the collective bargaining process
• Knowledge of the United Steelworkers Union
• Expertise on challenges and opportunities in international development, globalization, and international solidarity, especially as they relate to gender, class and intersectionality
• Excellent education facilitator skills, and experience in curriculum design
• Demonstrated ability to drive communications and outreach strategies using traditional, web-based and social media channels in a progressive political context
• Knowledge of Spanish an asset

The position is based in Toronto.
